From the Principal Welcome to all students, staff and parents for the commencement of the 2008 school year. As the new Principal I feel both privileged and excited about leading the future directions of a long standing educational institution in the community such as Fawkner Secondary College. In taking on the responsibility of Principal I acknowledge and respect the ideals and ethics established by the college in what will be its 52nd year of operation. These are an important element of the college, and reflect the needs and values of education in the local community. Education more than any other social institution, must however embrace change and the rapid progress of the 21st century. The skills and knowledge demanded of students will continue to evolve and progress and Fawkner Secondary College must endeavour to provide for the individual learning needs of all our students. The College has commenced an exciting journey titled "regenerating a culture of connectedness and success". This new direction implies the new vision of the college, which aims to further develop a culture which provides the best learning outcomes for all students, and offers an environment which is caring, inclusive of the community and is progressive. As a small 7 - 12 Secondary environment the college is well placed to provide programs which cater for the individual learning needs of all students. One of the most significant changes in 2008 will be the introduction of our new curriculum structure for Years 7 - 10. Students at these levels will have their learning programs revolve around the requirements of the state wide curriculum the VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards). All students will undertake studies in the essential areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, the Arts, Technology and Health & Physical Education. In understanding that the basis of all deep learning requires comprehensive skills in literacy and numeracy the college has made this area one of its major priorities. All students will be tested in these two areas and provided the support to improve their literacy and numeracy skills with the assistance of specialised staff and programs. In providing students with a learning environment which is engaging and linked to the passion of the community the college is implementing a number of special programs. We have been most excited with the launch of our Soccer Academy Program as part of the curriculum in 2008. This program already has 70 male and female students enrolled and will cover the learning requirements expected in the Health & Physical Education course of study. Students in the Soccer Academy will also be provided with specialist coaching on a weekly basis. A Performing Arts Program focusing on dance will also be launched to provide the needs of many of our students, especially the girls. In an effort to continue to provide for the individual learning needs of all students the college will be implementing an Enrichment Program for students in Years 7 & 8 in 2008. This program provides the opportunity for students who are identified through college data and teacher observation as having above average learning skills. The Enrichment program is an extension based program which aims to provide for a cohort of the student body. Within the Later Years Program, which covers the VCE, VET and VCAL areas, students are offered a wide range of study choices focused on providing the skills required to pursue their future pathways options. This area will also be a priority in the college aiming to better support students and teachers to achieve the best results. The physical environment of the college will also be a focus in 2008. In aiming to provide a productive learning environment, pleasant physical facilities are important. The college has committed to improving a range of areas. These include; landscaping projects, synthetic turf sports areas, additional air conditioning and improving the college streetscape from Jukes Road. Parents wishing to make further enquires or to arrange a tour are asked to contact the college on 93591166. Gus Napoli Principal
